In today’s online world, it’s easy to get caught up in trying to appear cool and smart. We often see people posting about their accomplishments, sharing their opinions, and trying to sound more intelligent than they actually are. But I learned a valuable lesson from a humble vada pau shopkeeper in Bangalore/Mumbai that has stuck with me to this day.
This shopkeeper was a quiet, unassuming man who spoke softly and seemed poor. He didn’t try to draw attention to himself or boast about his business. But one day, I had the chance to see his balance sheet, and I was shocked — he was a millionaire! His simple, unpretentious exterior belied a successful and profitable business.
As a software engineer, I worked hard every day, but I wasn’t earning anywhere near what this shopkeeper was making. Seeing his success made me feel a little bad about myself, to be honest. But then I realized that this experience was teaching me a valuable lesson.
The shopkeeper’s humility and simplicity were not weaknesses, but strengths. He didn’t feel the need to show off or prove himself to others, and as a result, he was able to focus on building a successful business. He was kind, generous, and helpful to those around him, and his simplicity made him more relatable and likable.
This experience taught me that even if I become rich or successful, I should strive to stay humble and down-to-earth. I should focus on doing good work and helping others, rather than trying to impress people with my accomplishments. When we don’t feel the need to show off and live simply, we can achieve great things without worrying about bad things getting in the way.
So, I’ve made it a point to live by this lesson. I try to be humble, kind, and helpful, and to focus on enjoying my own life rather than trying to impress others. I’ve learned that it’s okay to look like a “fool” or seem simple, because true success comes from living a life of purpose and integrity, not from trying to appear cool or smart.
