As we navigate the complexities of modern life, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle and forget to take care of one of the most important people — ourselves. Self-care has become a buzzword in recent years, but what does it really mean to prioritize our own well-being?

Dr. Pooja Lakshmin, a psychiatrist, argues that true self-care goes beyond the superficial fixes we often associate with the term. It’s not just about treating ourselves to a spa day or buying the latest wellness products. Real self-care requires embracing internal work, which she outlines as four practices: setting boundaries, practicing self-compassion, aligning our values, and exercising power.

Setting boundaries is about learning to say no to things that drain our energy and say yes to things that nourish our mind, body, and soul. It’s about recognizing that we can’t pour from an empty cup and taking steps to protect our time and energy.

Practicing self-compassion is about treating ourselves with kindness and understanding, just as we would a close friend. It’s about acknowledging that we’re human and that it’s okay to make mistakes.

Aligning our values is about living a life that reflects what’s truly important to us. It’s about identifying what we stand for and making choices that align with those values.

Exercising power is about recognizing that we have the ability to create change in our lives and in the world around us. It’s about taking action and advocating for ourselves and others.

By incorporating these practices into our daily lives, we can experience a deeper sense of fulfillment and well-being. We can move beyond the surface level of self-care and cultivate a more meaningful and lasting sense of self-love and self-acceptance.

As Dr. Lakshmin says, “Self-care is not selfish. Self-care is community care.” By taking care of ourselves, we’re better equipped to show up for others and make a positive impact in the world.

So, take a step back and assess your self-care routine. Are you focusing on superficial fixes or are you doing the deeper work of setting boundaries, practicing self-compassion, aligning your values, and exercising power? Remember, true self-care is a journey, not a destination. It’s time to move beyond the surface level and cultivate a more meaningful and lasting sense of self-love and self-acceptance.
